Tribute to Shri Harish Bhat                                                                                            Date: 04-11-2017

Shri Harish Bhat – a genuine human being, a scholar, a teacher par-excellence and someone who was deeply concerned about our environment and worked tirelessly to improve it. Shri Harish Bhat was a Research Scientist in the field of Ecology and Biodiversity for over 20 years at Energy and Wetland Group, Centre for Ecological Sciences at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. But for Harish Bhat, this area was more than just a subject of study or research. He worked to spread awareness among people including young students to try and improve our environment.

Shri AnanthKumar, Union Cabinet Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Chemicals & Fertilizers, who attended the funeral today said “Shri Harish Bhat was an environmental scholar. His life was dedicated to the study of trees, plants, birds, butterflies, lakes and water bodies and environmental protection. Not only this, he was dedicated to spreading this knowledge and awareness through a number of innovative programmes like Nature-Science Internship Programme in association with Adamya Chetana for high school students.

His sudden departure has shocked all of us. His deep concern, commitment and dedication for environment is and will continue to be an inspiration for every Sasyagrahi.

Childlike innocence, sharp intellect, ever smiling demeanour, humility and at the same time undying perseverance marked his personality. We have lost a friend; we have lost an associate and we have lost a warrior for environmental concerns with an undying spirit. I only urge all that the best way to pay tribute to Shri Harish Bhat is to continue with his cherished missions. Come let’s all pray and pay our solemn Sasyanjali”.

Shri Harish Bhat was associated with Adamya Chetana for more than 6 years in all their Green initiatives. Whether it was Green Bharat 1:1 to increase green cover of our cities, energy-saver workshops for schools or Nature-Science Internship programme, his enthusiastic contribution was immense.

“Environmental conservation is the touching stone and Shri Harish Bhat was the key advisor for all these projects. Nature-Science Internship programme, which he conceptualised and was running has 150 high school students from multiple schools. His presence will be sorely missed by all of us at Adamya Chetana and all the students and people he inspired”, said Dr. Tejaswini AnanthKumar, ChairPerson for Adamya Chetana.

Former minister Shri Vinay Kumar Sorake, former MLAs Shri Lalaji Mendon and Shri Raghupathi Bhat, Shri Mohan Alwa, and a number of other dignitaries and local representatives were also present at the funeral.
